Pass/No Pass (P/NP) is a way of taking a class without worrying too much about your performance. As long as you satisfactorily complete the course (at the “C” or better level), you will receive a “Pass (P)” on your Butte College transcript. If you finish the course at the “D” or “F” level, you will receive a “No Pass (NP)” on your transcript. Neither P nor NP will affect your Butte College grade point average. Choosing this option can be especially attractive for General Education or non-major related coursework. As a general rule, do not choose this option if the course has anything to do with your major. However, please note that for Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 and beyond transfers, the CSU campuses will accept “P” graded transferable college courses completed in winter, spring or summer 2020 to satisfy all General Education and major prerequisite courses.
Yes, if you receive a P. No, if you receive a NP. As mentioned, if you complete the course at the “C” or better level, you will receive a “Pass (P)” on your transcript. If you finish the course at the “D” or “F” level, you will receive a “No Pass (NP)” on your transcript.
No at Butte College, only a slight chance if your transfer. While you will receive units for courses completed with a P, they are not used to compute your Butte College grade point average. While the CSU’s & UC’s honor Butte College’s policy on Pass/ No Pass, some independent or out-of-state colleges and universities may count a P as a “C” when computing your GPA for admission. This is exceptionally rare. So, while you will receive units for courses completed with a P, they are not used to compute your Butte College grade point average, or in general, your transfer GPA. Lastly, if you are considering applying to law school in the future, please know that the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) does not factor in Ps for admission GPA. However, an “NP” is currently factored in as an “F.”
Students who receive a NP do not get credit for the course. Butte College will exclude any NP’s earned in Spring 2020 from Progress Probation calculations. Note: This exclusion does not apply to students receiving Financial Aid or Veterans benefits. Please contact Financial Aid or Veterans Services for additional information before electing this option.
Yes. If you get a NP, you will not receive any units for the course.
No. Some courses (e.g. various Physics) are “Graded Only” courses. This is designated in the Butte College catalog. Under current circumstances, for the Spring 2020 semester, Butte College will override the “graded only” option allowing any student to take any course(s) as P/NP.
Yes. In general, do not take courses required for your major P/NP. Most transfer institutions require courses for the major to be completed with a letter grade, therefore a P grade may result in a student needing to retake a course. However, please note that for Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 and beyond transfers, the CSU campuses will accept “P” graded transferable college courses completed in winter, spring or summer 2020 to satisfy all General Education and major prerequisite courses.
Yes. Butte College will only allow a total of 8 units to be counted toward requirements for the Associates Degree. As of Spring 2020, for students planning on transferring to the University of California (UC), the UCs have suspended their prior maximum of 14 units taken Pass/No Pass as part of the 60 needed to transfer. So, there is currently a suspension on the maximum limit for UC transfers. For the California State University (CSU) system and the Independent Colleges & Universities, the policies vary from campus to campus.

No, not until they go to post your grade at the end of the term. If you have informed the Admissions & Records Office that you will be taking the course P/NP, the instructor will not know during the term that you are taking the class P/NP. They will assign you letter grades for work throughout the term but will assign your P or NP grade at term completion due a prompt by Admissions and Records.
